Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier A very dark, almost black beer with a huge but fairly short lived tan coloured head. The aroma is most definitely wood smoke with some faint cloves, banana and vanilla buried in there. Feel is very full and rich. Tastes are all beneath the smoke. Some would find the wood smoke overpowering but I enjoy it. Some bacon or sausage tastes come through in the smoke but I find it most like wood smoke. If you concentrate below the smoke you can find some berries and cloves but it takes a bit of work. The finish is quite dry, almost tannin like. I found the beer to grow on me and the other tastes became more noticeable as it warmed. The smoke was still predominant but it left a bit of room for some of the other flavours to come through.

You Like this stuff?

I can't believe you like this.
It tastes like bad weiners cooked on a campfire.
I give it to people I don't like just so I can watch their face when they try to drink it.
Yukk!

Aecht Schenkerla Rauchbier Almost black beer with a huge thick tan head. Wheat beer aromas with smoke overlying everything. Pure smoke flavor to start. Bacon and citrus in the middle with a very full mouth feel. It ends with a pleasant dryness that I really like.

Having just finished reading an excellent book by Garrett Oliver, the Brewmaster at The Brooklyn Brewery, called The 'Brewmasters Table', I had to try one of His suggestions. I cooked up smoked sausages, saurkraut, a mix of mashed potatoes and well cooked cauliflower with an accompianment of sweet mustard and the 'Aecht Rauchbier'. Outstanding!

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Not much of a head. Very dark, but clear not cloudy. Smoke odor is very noticeable. I also smell hops. Can really taste the smoke followed by the bitterness of the hops. As the beer warms the flavor changes and the smoke is less evident. This is a beer I would buy and drink when I want something a bit different.
