BEER is GOOD!
About Bruce Ticknor
"Beer Geek" or "Fan"
I like beer. I like beer a LOT. In fact I like beer so much that I often have trouble NOT talking about beer. Sitting in pubs and someone says something about beer and I have to hold my tongue to keep from jumping in to the conversation and especially to keep from correcting them.
I've learned that people seldom appreciate being corrected and would much prefer to carry on in their ignorance than to listen to me.
Now in all honesty there are many other subjects which interest me and I can jump into discussions of these topics at the drop of a hat as well. The difference is that many other people are interested in these topics and some of them are quite well informed so they don't seem to mind my input, but when it comes to beer most people don't really seem to care. They just want to pound back a few.
That's alright too, beer is pretty democratic in that respect.
Anyway, all this gets me called a "Beer Geek" quite often. I can live with that, even take a bit of pride in it, but it is a bit of a derogatory term, or at least has a derogatory context to it.
A couple days ago I am sitting quietly in a pub enjoying a decent beer and minding my own business when another guy , whom I didn't know, sits down beside me. I don't usually mind this at all, after all conversation is one good reason to frequent pubs.
This gentleman started quoting baseball statistics at me. He was pretty good at it too, could quote individual and team stats going back to the 1950's. Some of them might even have been right for all I know. Thing is, I'm pretty sure the baseball season is over for this year. Judging from the snow we had on the ground the other day I am guessing that we are well into hockey season. Perhaps late season football or the years non-existent basketball season. Yup, I just checked and baseball is over for this year.
Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against baseball. Even enjoy watching a game now and then, but I don't care nearly enough about it to want to be informed of who the 1962 batting champ was or that the rules and equipment have changed enough to make direct comparisons with today's players difficult. I just want to enjoy a game one in a while. Much like my statistic quoting bar neighbour didn't want to know anything about the (mainstream) beer he was chugging.
Now, none of this is actually my point, and I really did have one when I started this ramble.
My point is that this gentleman is a "Baseball Fan" while I am a "Beer Geek".
Doesn't sound fair somehow.
