Hoegaarden Original Belgian White Beer

The name alone inspires lots of jokes around the pubs in Ontario.
But it pours a lovely and cloudy pale yellow with a very thick but short lived white head.
The aroma is a touch sour and full of bread dough and biscuit.
Feel is nicely full for a witbier, I find too many of them to be watery but this one is anything but.
The taste is quite tradional for a witbier. Lots of banana and bubblegum with a touch of a sour flavour, like a sour orange taste, or an unripe apple sour flavour.
There is a solid bread dough base and a nice sparkling hop flavour below the banana taste. Just a touch of cloves come through, just enough to say it is there without being overpowering in any way.
It certainly puts "Kieth's" and "Rickard's" pathetic attempts at a wit bier to shame. This is still a moderately mainstream version of a wheat beer but much closer to the traditional tastes than the others, and I don't find any of the fake fruit flavours which the Canadian mainstream makers add.
If it is to be your first wheat beer you could do far worse. Just be prepared because this ain't your "Blue", "Canadian" or "Bud". The tastes will not be what you are used to if those are all you have tried.

On a hot, sunny, late spring day this is going down wonderfully.
Time for another.

Had this long ago.

I think I will have to try this again. It's been a long time since I last had it and now that I've learned to appreciate wheat beers I must try it again to see what I taste.

Never tried one

I don't think I have ever had a wheat beer. At least not that I know of.
I'm going to give this a try.
I'll let you know what I think.

Hoegaarden Original Belgian White Beer

Hoegaarden is the authentic Belgian wheat or white beer. Sweet and sour beer with a little bitterness, slightly spicy, with a strong touch of coriander and a hint of orange, perfect for warm summer days. This beer would go great with seafood. Not what you want for a session beer.

It's been a year since I had this last and I now find it a lot more complex and interesting than I first thought. I know it hasn't changed so it has to be me. This is much nicer than I thought. I am going to change my rating.

Hoegaarden Original Belgian White Beer

Pours a cloudy pale lemon color.
Strong white head that is gone quickly.
Tastes of dough, citrus, banana and mild spice with a creamy mouth feel. Strong citrus finish that is bitter but not in a nice hop way.
I don't know what the rave about this beer is all about. I've had better whit beers.

Hoegaarden Original Belgian White Beer

Very cloudy, pale yellow, I see why they are called white beers.
A thick white head.
Smells a bit like orange.
Tastes of banana and some spice, cloves maybe.
It is quite full feeling.
I could learn to like this stuff. It has a lot of different flavours, sometimes it almost reminds me of a vanilla milkshake and then there is a touch of orange or something.
It does seem a bit dry after I swallow, not a lot, just a touch.

I think I will be trying some more wheat beers. I like this one a lot.

Beer Quote of the day

Why is American beer served cold? So you can tell it from urine.

(Not true anymore, thankfully.)
