L'Alchimiste - Eisbock
Eisbocks are rare in Canada, They are made by freezing the beer and skimming off the ice, this is technically 'distillation' and is illegal in Ontario so don't expect to find any soon in these parts.
Pours a clear, very dark amber/red with a fairly thin and short lived tan coloured head.
The aroma is full of dark berries and raisins with a hint of alcohol, some sherry and rum notes come to mind.
Feel is quite rich and creamy.
Tastes are great, some chocolate and coffee mixed with raisins, dates, half fermented peaches and honey. The hops are very light in this brew, it's mostly about the berries and the sherry/rum tastes, but it is a great blend of tastes. Some light earthiness lingers in the aftertaste.
It's easy to make a beer like this too sweet and cloying but this one walks the fine line and becomes a great after dinner drink. I only wish I had more of them.
