Les Freres Houblon - Coureur Des Bois

Pours a clear, dark, amber/red with a full. rocky, off white head which lasts a while.
Aroma of hard water, iron, and alcohol.
Feel is medium, somewhat thick and creamy.
First taste impression is roasted malt, way too strong, some dough and earth, then the alcohol taste hits. It's nothing like a Belgian Amber, too much Guiness influence with all the roasted malt tastes, what are they doing in here. No berry or spice tastes that I can detect, the Alcohol tastes seem to overpower everything. The closest I can come to comparing this is to one of the Faxe strong beers which are not brewed for taste, only for alcohol content.
As you can tell, I'm disappointed with this one.
P.S. IF you let this beer warm a bit and then pour all the sediment from the bottom of the bottle into your glass you can get some blackberry and raisin tastes in there, I suspect this is what the brewers found but it disappears if the beer settles a bit and can only come through if the sediments are mixed in and the beer is cellar temperature.
I raised my rating because of this but it is still not enough to make this beer a winner.

Beer Quote of the day

The more macho the bar, the wimpier the beer.

— Michael Jackson

(I'll have another barkeep, but make it a REAL beer this time.)
