So beertaster guys, what is good beer for New Years? I can't afford Champaign this year.
Any really good suggestions? Something a bit special but not too much money.

New Years
We, (that being the girls I hang with), are going to take a cab to a bar that features good beer, both local and imported. It's always a beautiful thing to try something new of the malty kind. We wish you all a Happy New Year!
Good Beer
I've got 3 suggestions for you. I've tried all 3 over the last few weeks and I've been saving some of each for my own celebration.
1) Westmalle Tripple Trappist Ale
2) Aventinus Weizen Eisbock
or
3) Mill St. Barley Wine
All three are good and I may just have some of each before the clock strikes a whole new year. May it be better than the last one.

What about barley wine? Is that any good?

Some barley wines are very nice in the winter. Like any beer it varies.
Mill St. makes a new batch every year, the 2008 version is not bad at all. If you get any extra you might try putting a bottle away and trying it again next year. I think this one would age well.
Also, it comes in a very fancy ceramic swing top jug.
I recently tried a "Thomas Hardy" ale which is, to my mind, more of a barley wine than a traditional ale. It is quite sweet and would make a good dessert beer.
Good beer for New Years
I plan on having one of the McAuslan brews from Quebec. My wife and I are going to have a very quiet New Years now that the Children are grown. We have nice cheeses and fruit and a hard to find dip mix that is out of this world with chunks of baguette bread.
