Ola Dubh - Special Reserve 40

The fifth of a series of Ola Dubh beers, all aged in oak Scotch barrels of various ages (the Scotch was aged in the barrels for years, not necessarily the beers).
This one was aged (around 6 months) in Highland Parks 40 year old single malt Scotch barrels.

Pours thick and viscous, like the others. A thin tan head which is disappearing quickly.
Aroma of alcohol, fruit (maybe apples or pears and dark berries), faint hint of smoke and lemony citrus.
Feel is very thick and rich.
Taste starts with a heavy roasted grain flavour, lot's of raisin and plum taste with a strong molasses and chocolate flavor. Any scotch tastes are well hidden but the alcohol does come through noticeably.
I can pick out hints of vanilla and light peat notes.
The finish is chocolate with a nice bright berry and lemon citrus flavour lingering a while.
This is like a good port wine. quite nice as a sipping beer on a cold evening.
I am enjoying it a lot but I keep asking myself whether or not it is worth $18.95 for a 330ml bottle.
I think I will forget the cost for a while and just enjoy the beer as it is.

Beer Quote of the day

You know, nobody eats in England. Three or four pints of English beer a night fills you. I can't say I'm very impressed with the food in America. it's all sort of bland. Like turkey sandwiches.

— Anne Dudley

(Yes, beer is food.)
