Beer Cocktails???
Good Lord! mix beer with something else? Sacrilege!
All right, when I was about 18 (Far too long ago to want to think about) we drank something we called a Golden Mateuse. Molson Golden beer with about 25% Mateuse wine. Six of them were guaranteed to get a skinny eighteen year old falling down drunk. But when you started out with Golden you had to do something to know you were drinking and, at eighteen, the whole point was to get drunk, taste had nothing to do with it.
Red eye was the drink of choice when hung over. The tomato juice made it possible to choke down more beer until the effects of the hang over wore off (and after Golden Mateuse the hangover was awsome). Then back to the pure thing. I admit, however, that draft in the "Gentlemen Only" side of the bar REQUIRED a sprinkle of salt and a tap on the rim of the glass (a shaker was a fixture on every table) to give a few bubbles to the flat draft that was the norm.
There is nothing beyond the Black and Tan. Mixing Beer with anything other than Beer is a sacrilege. Now the only thing I ever mix beer with is food. Since Beer IS food, sometimes I don't mix anything. My ancestors on my Fathers side invented the purity laws. Long may they reign.
I hope the guy that invented a beer cocktail meets up with a lot of very large NINJA BREWMASTERS in a dark alley while carrying one of their tarted up, yuppie, fancy pants cocktails.
I'd like to see what he looks like while climbing out of the fermenting vat. He had probably never tasted a REAL beer before. It would probably kill him to find out what beer REALLY tastes like.
If all you ever drank was Canadian, or Blue, or Bud, you have an excuse for mixing it with something to at least give it SOME taste.
If you drink REAL BEER why on earth would you want to pollute it with some inferior product? Good beer is more than able to stand on it's own two feet. I say again, corrupting it with foreign matter is sacrilege.

Beer straight up, whiskey chaser.
Enough beer has always been fine for me. If I get desperate there is always some good rye or scotch around somewhere.
Once or twice I even drank wine. But I would only admit to it under oath.
Mixing beer with anything just seems wrong.
Good beer stands alone just fine thank you.
Red eye
I agree with most of what you all say but I find there is nothing like a tall beer with tomato juice the morning after to settle things down.
